Hacking wireless soil moisture sensor

Most of the effort in the gardening goes to keeping plant soil moisture at right level. Human cannot always be there and check it all the time. This is why in most cases moisture sensors are used that alert when plant needs watering. You can find cheap ready made solutions that beeps when there is water needed, but also there are more complex sensors with wireless data transfer. Wireless data is gathered in to nice receiver which can be hung somewhere inside. You can get those for about $10. So Ray decided to dig in to those and see if wireless sensors can be used as generic sensors for interfacing with Arduino or Raspberry Pi. He found that Springfield 91746 Digital Soil Moisture Meter and Freeze Alert sensor communicates at… Continue reading

Use your spare Raspberry Pi to measure soil moisture

One thing about successful plant growing it to keep proper moisture level of soil. This is even more important when plant is pot where it has no way reach water source. To avoid drying out or over-watering – a simple electronics can help. Of course this can be achieved with simple 555 timer based buzzer sensor. But why bother if there is a spare Raspberry Pi. Jeremy Blythe shared his build where his raspberry Pi successfully monitors his plants. He used soil moisture sensor brick which gives analog signal. Raspberry Pi cannot read analog, so there is an external ADC (MCP3008) used which interfaces via SPI. Jeremy put external circuit on a sticky breadboard which stuck nicely to plexiglass. On top of RasPi he placed Adafruit RGB negative 16×2 LCD… Continue reading

Garden Monitor Outdoor System – It Will Take Care Your Backyard Soil Moisture

You’re too tired or lazy to wake up at 6:00, rush to your backyard and watering the plants? Well, you can always having a longer and quality sleep without need to wake up early just for the watering purpose, by creating a “Garden Monitor Outdoor System”. Before you starting the project, you need to pay attention to these following factors: The sunlight intensity at the surface Temperature at the surface Humidity at the surface Temperature at three inch depth Moisture content at three inch depth Temperature at two foot depth Moisture content at two foot depth Ok, let’s the project started… Firstly, you need to apply the code for the Remote Programming Module 08M Code, which you can get it Here. Beside that, you have to follow the below instructions:… Continue reading
