Would you build a remote controlled lawn mower?

Mowing grass is one of those ‘must be done’ jobs where some people like it and some don’t. In fact this is great exercise and relax at least for me. Anyway if you like building cool things and amaze people, then why not upgrading your lawn mover to remote controlled version. Blake Hodgson have built an open source version of such mower called Lawn Da Vinci. He welded a metal frame of angle steel, fit a mobility scooter electric motor on the back to drive it around. As he says – any cheap mover can be fit to the frame to do the cutting job. He used an RC remote Tower Hobbies System 3000, but in fact any RC remote should be fine. The driving motor is controlled with Arduino and Sabertooth 2×25 controler. Since this is still in progress, here might be an updates in code and project. Optionally there is no problem to hook a webcam with Raspberry Pi which would translate live video stream. It might be possible to mow grass while sitting on sofa. As always… Continue reading

USB IR remote control using PIC18F2455

Have you ever thought of having a remote control on your personal computer? Some media center laptops already have this feature but most of our computers at home don’t. To alleviate the pain of standing to pause and play his favorite movie Arthur Benemann built a USB IR remote control for his computer. Using a PIC18F2455 Arthur built this little plug and play wonder; it receives, decodes signals from a remote control and emulates the received signals as keystrokes in a keyboard – brilliant isn’t it? The default firmware was configured to be compatible with the Sony SIRC 20 bit protocol, but this can be modified to work with other IR protocol it just needs a little programming. Continue reading

Apply the 3R Concept with Your Old Personal GSM Phone

Do you love to follow the latest trend of cell phones? If you answered yes, then I’m bet you might have at least one old GSM Phone, which had been left in drawer for years. Since you’re not anymore using it, why don’t show off your credibility and creativity in the renovation field? This simply an easy task, where you just need to apply the PIC microcontroller and connect it with your Ericsson T18 series phone (You can also test this stuff with the A1018 and T28 series as well). This method only good for own personal use, if you want it to be commercialized, it’s meet the difficulty of finding the suitable connectors in large amount (Go on and try to commercialize it if you did found a good supplier, which can provide you those needed connectors in low price). The objective for this project is to remote activated or receiving SMS in alarm case. Therefore, this GSM2 has transformed into a multipurpose gadget (bidirectional GSM Remote Control – remote activator – receiver of SMS alarms) now. Don’t just… Continue reading
